Previously, the term “MR” (Mental Retardation / मतिमंद) was commonly used in society. However, since this term is considered offensive and carries a negative connotation, the term “IDD” (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) is now used as a more respectful and appropriate term in accordance with international standards as well as the guidelines of the Government of India.
The term “IDD” focuses on an individual’s abilities and developmental needs rather than their limitations. Individuals who experience difficulties in intellectual functioning, learning pace, communication skills, social adjustment, and daily living skills are included under the term “Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.”
Our institution uses “IDD” instead of “MR” to promote dignity, inclusion, rights, abilities, and a positive perspective toward children with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
According to the “Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 (RPWD Act)” in India, the term “Intellectual Disability” has officially replaced “Mental Retardation.” Therefore, in schools, colleges, government documents, training institutions, and the social sector, it is now considered necessary to use the terms “IDD” or “Intellectual Disability” instead of “MR.”
IDD (Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities) refers to a condition involving intellectual and developmental challenges. It may affect a child’s learning ability, understanding, communication, social skills, and daily life functioning. With proper education, training, therapy, and family support, these children can become more independent and capable.
Established on 26 January 1988, Jidda School for Children with Intellectual Disabilities was founded by Mrs. Sumati Jambhekar with the support of Prof. Indumati Pol.
The school was established with the aim of bringing such intellectually challenged children from Chiplun Taluka into the mainstream of society through special education, training, and rehabilitation. At that time, it was the only special school of its kind in the North Ratnagiri district.
What began with just two students has grown into a meaningful centre of special education that has positively transformed the lives of many children and their families. Since its inception, Jidda School has worked with sensitivity, commitment, and continuity to support the holistic development of every student.
Today, the school’s teaching and non-teaching staff work closely to promote the educational, social, physical, emotional, and intellectual development of each child. Despite increasing enrolment and limited resources, Jidda School continues to focus on identifying individual abilities, nurturing potential, building self-reliance, and developing confident personalities.
To encourage all-round growth, the school regularly conducts educational, co-curricular, cultural, sports, medical, and skill-development activities. Through specialised teaching methods and practical learning approaches, students are supported in strengthening their learning abilities, communication skills, social participation, and self-confidence.

Jidda School also gives special attention to language development and social interaction. Many children who are unable to speak at the time of admission gradually learn to communicate with confidence and participate more comfortably in social settings. Over the years, many students trained at Jidda School have gone on to work in different places and achieve economic independence. As a result, they become active, capable, and responsible members of their families and communities.
The school has also earned recognition through participation in cultural programmes, sports competitions, and art activities at both state and national levels.
One of the proudest achievements of Jidda School was securing first place in the Jet Toy Competition organised by Mahindra & Mahindra.
The physical well-being of students remains an important priority. Annual health check-ups, including blood, dental, skin, and intellectual assessments, are conducted regularly.
To support social and emotional development, birthdays, festivals, and cultural programmes are celebrated with enthusiasm throughout the year.
The impact of Jidda School extends far beyond individual students. The development of one child often brings positive change to the entire family and to many connected households.
